If you can’t beat them, compete against them. This seems to be the reaction of many media outlets, which are setting up web TV applications where you can watch TV, movies online for free, as a reaction to the increasing illegal downloading of TV shows and movies. Unlike illegal downloads, the content of these sites offers video quality ranging from good to excellent. However, as in commercial broadcast TV you also have to put up with a few seconds of commercials at set intervals when watching the content. The most popular site to watch TV, movies online is Hulu, because of the wide variety of its licensed content. Since it is a joint venture of ABC, Fox and Universal-NBC it has access to their programs and movies, as well as those from other networks such as Comedy Central, PBS, Scyfy and USA Network.

You can watch full episodes of popular shows as well as full-length movies and documentaries. Trailers to upcoming movies are also available for viewing. Hulu also offers widgets that you can embed on your operating system, and you can subscribe to ensure that new episodes of the shows you’ve selected are put into your queue. A major disadvantage, however, is that TV episodes are available online only for a limited time, meaning that you’ll either have to buy or rent the episode if its available, or you’ll have to resign yourself to the fact that you’ve missed it for good. Fancast is also a good choice if you want to watch TV, movies online although it relies on Hulu for much of its content, resulting in a lot of overlap between the two sites.

It also has an online store where users can buy or rent TV episodes and movies through download on demand. Apart from TV and movies, Joost also hosts music videos on its site. But what is most notable about the site is the way it encourages interaction among users by allowing them to share what their favorite videos are with their friends. Once you’ve signed in, the top menu bar has tabs for Friends and Groups, which takes you to a page where their favorite videos are listed. The site also maintains a “JoostFeed” that allows users to see what content is currently popular. Veoh is the least known among web TV applications, with much of its content also sourced from Hulu, although it does have some movies and TV shows unique to the site. Unlike the other applications, however, it allows users to download and record shows on their PCs for later viewing. But Veoh’s main selling point for users may be that the site allows them to upload their own videos, a la YouTube.

It also allows users to interact by providing discussion forums and messaging for their friends. Bloggers can also embed some of the content on their blogs. With their choice of web TV applications allowing them to access content at the click of a mouse, it is not surprising that tech-savvy viewers increasingly watch TV, movies online rather than in theaters or on regular broadcast TV.
